AI governance · 2026
What's technically possible, and above all what the law allows.
In short
Sometimes, but it's fragile and often illegal. On your own content, yes. On other people's, or to hide the AI, no.
Technical
This guide won't tell you how to do it, and that's deliberate. The useful point for a business is not the method, it's knowing what you are allowed to do. To understand how these marks work, see our guide are AI contents traceable.
The real question
The answer comes down to who owns the content and the intent behind the removal.
| Situation | Legal? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your own AI content (your text, your generated images) | Yes | The content is yours to use. |
| Cleaning metadata from a file you publish | Yes, common | Normal practice, as long as you deceive no one. |
| Removing the mark to hide that it is AI | Not advised | Runs against the AI Act transparency duties. |
| Content generated by someone else (image, photo, document) | No | Copyright infringement. |
Careful
Most "remove AI watermark" searches aim at one thing: passing AI content off as human work, or slipping past detectors. Bad bet, for three reasons.
Our role
AI used well doesn't need to be hidden. That's the framework we set up for our clients. Let's talk.
